„Amazing Grace“ is one of the best known Christian hymns. The lyrics for „Amazing Grace“ were written by John Newton (1725-1807) who was the captain of a slave ship. Later he renounced his profession, became a minister and joined William Wilberforce in the fight against slavery. „Amazing Grace“ was very popular with both sides in the American Civil war. The Cherokee Indians sung „Amazing Grace“ while on the “trail of tears” (1838) when they were not able to give their dead a full burial. Since then “Amazing Grace” is often considered to be the Cherokee National Anthem. „Amazing Grace“ is pentatonic and is frequently performed on bagpipes; in fact „Amazing Grace“ has become associated with that instrument.
