America, The Beautiful is a popular American song with music by Samuel A. Ward, and lyrics by Katherine Lee Bates. The words of America, the Beautiful were inspired by Bates’ visit to the summit of Pikes’ Peak. There, as she looked ”out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies” the opening lines came to her. The words to America The Beautiful were actually used in many tunes, but most popularly used to the tune “Materna”, which is the version shown here.
