Away In A Manger is a traditional Christmas tune. It was first published by James R. Murray in 1885 in an Lutheran Sunday School book. The author of Away In A Manger is, however, unknown, although the third stanza seems to have been added by Dr. John McFarland in 1904. Rather confusingly, there are two entirely different melodic versions of Away In a Manger, and it is not clear how this came about. Occasionally the tune is attributed to Martin Luther, though this appears to be erroneous. The confusion may have arisen out of the fact that Away In A Manger was subtitled "Luther's Cradle Hymn" in the 1885 publication.
