Dave Brubeck is an incredibly talented composer and musician. One of his specialities is choosing alternative time-signatures for his pieces. His most famous piece, Take Five, is a great example of this, it being written in 5/4 time.

5/4 time can be explained by knowing that the 5 is the number of beats in a bar (measure) and 4 is the value of each note in that beat. Thus a waltz is in 3/4 time so has 3 crotchet beats to a bar.

Brubeck joined the army and soon started playing in bands and had his duties diverted to entertainment rather than battle duties.

His most prolific era was with the Dave Brubeck Quartet from 1951 to 1967.

Brubeck died of heart failure at the age of 91 in December 2012, a day before his 92nd birthday
