Kirk Franklin is a multi-award winning gospel musician who's talent has shone from a very young age. Due to being abandoned by his mother, his aunt raised him and encourage him to take piano lessons from the age of four where he was quickly grasped the concept of reading and writing music and was soon able to play music from just hearing it. By the age of 12, he had become the director of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church choir which is astonishing for someone of such a young age.

Kirk's upbringing had a strong focus on religion and this likely influenced the fact that he has mostly written gospel music. He first found success with a self-organised group called "The Family", which was a choir formed mostly from his friends. This group greatly increased the popularity of gospel music, with their first album spending almost 2 years on the gospel music charts and achieving multiple awards throughout the groups discography.

Kirk also found great success after starting his solo career in 2001, releasing several albums that climbed to number 1 in the gospel charts and earning several more awards for his solo work.
