Lorde first appeared on stage as a 13 year old girl at a talent show - in May 2009. She won the Belmont Intermediate School contest singing as a duo with her friend Louis McDonald. Later that year the pair were on Jim Mora's Afternoons chat show and performed covers of Pixie Lott's "Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)" and Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody". McDonald's father sent recordings of the pair to Universal Music Group and they were subsequently signed up.

Universal's Scott Maclachlan split the duo and paired singer-songwriter Joel Little with Lorde and he has gone on to co-write nearly all her songs with her. She has gone on be New Zealand's biggest pop artist from 2015 onwards - form the age of just 19.
