Oh, when the saints go marching in (a.k.a. When The Saints) is one of the most popular American gospel songs.  Although it is originally a spiritual it has become a mainstay of the jazz-repertoire. It was first published in 1896 in Cincinnati with music by James Milton Black (a composer and Sunday school teacher) and lyrics by Katharine Purvis (a lyricist and teacher). As the tune is based on a folk tune however, it would be incorrect to regard these two individuals as the actual “original” authors of Oh, when the saints go marching in. Consequently, there have been any different variations of the tune, some published in sheet music form, some not. The titles of these include: When the Saints March In for Crowning, When All the Saints Come Marching In and When the Saints Go Marching Home. The Jazz Trumpeter and singer Louis Armstrong can probably be credited with making Oh, when the saints world-famous.

Oh, when the saints go marching in,
Oh, when the saints go marching in
Lord how I want to be in that number
When the saints go marching in

And when the sun begins to shine
And when the sun begins to shine
Lord, how I want to be in that number
When the sun begins to shine
