The original was written in Versailles 1784 by a composer for Queen Marie Antoinette - Jean-Paul-Égide Martini. This one of many songs written in opera by him. He didn’t know it at the time, but he created a time-travelling song.It was likely written for Marie Antoinette so she could sing it whilst playing it on the harp.

43 years after Martini’s death in 1816, Hector Belioz included the song in a concert of his work. Belioz was besotted with a singer Pauline Viardot and she had Plaisir d’amour in her repertoire. In the late 19th century, the song benefitted from a boom in the sale of sheet music and it had become a nationalistic French song which became very popular and accessible.

By the early 1900s, because recording of music became possible, the music became very accessible and the audience of many songs grew very quickly. Artists would love to generate their own version, especially instrumentalists who knew that up and down America there were children craving songs not normally presented in a suitable way for them to play.

The key to success for time-travelling tunes is to be in the right place at the right time. To be picked up, reworked and re-presented as something new and excitingly pleasing. When RCA hit record song writers were scouting for ideas to develop as a key song to be sung by a relatively promising up and coming start, they found Plaisir d’amour. They then based Elvis Presley’s 1961, Can’t Help Falling in Love on it.

It’s recognisably the same tune though the lyrics are entirely new and it has a completely different rhythm and style. In the film Blue Hawaii, Elvis sings it to his sweetheart in a social gathering and instantly takes on a pleasing new form for a new audience. It’s pleasing right from the start by going up and down a fifth which is unusual. The bridge goes into a minor key and there is a beautiful cadence at the end.
