Dick Smith was inspired to write this song when he saw Honesdale´s Central Park (Pennsylvania) covered in snow. It was first recorded by Richard Himber and his orchestra for RCA in 1934. The orchestra included many famous studio musicians like Artie Shaw. Singer-songwriter Johnny Mercer took the song to No.4 on the Billboard Charts; Perry Como recorded a new version in 1959 for his Christmas album. Due to its theme "Winter Wonderland" is often thought of as a Christmas song, but the Christmas season is never mentioned. As the lyrics contain the word "Sleighbells" it is not surprising then that many people associate this song with Christmas.
