Eleanor Rigby is a composition by Paul McCartney. The piece was published in 1966 on the album Revolver. The instrumentation of the piece is interesting because no guitars, bass or drums are used, and John Lennon and George Harrison only contribute backing vocals. Instead of a rock set-up the song instead uses two string quartets (ie, a string octet), consisting of four violins, two violas and two cellos. The arrangement was written by the Beatles producer George Martin, and later even released as a single in its own right. The origin of the title of the piece is a bit strange, as Paul McCartney claims to have invented the name Eleanor Rigby. Years later however a grave stone with the name Eleanor Rigby was found in a cemetery in McCartney's home town, Liverpool. Both McCartney and Lennon often went sunbathing at this cemetery in their youth. On top of that a few yards away the name McKenzie can be found on another headstone. Father McKenzie is one of the characters in the lyrics. McCartney did find this quite curious himself, stating that the two names, that he may well seen in his youth, may have been provided by his subconscious. The first stanza reads:

Eleanor Rigby
Picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window
Wearing a face she keeps in a jar by the door
