Richard Clayderman's father was a piano teacher who taught him to play. He joined the Conservatoire de Paris when he was 12 years old and remained there for several years, becoming very proficient. His father fell ill and the family needed money so he was forced to leave and became a bank clerk. In his spare time, jhe played with a variety of bands and singers.

Clayderman was ask to play and record a gentle ballad for the piano in 1976. This had been composed by Paul de Senneville and was named for his baby daughter Adeline. He beat off 20 other pianists to be the successful pianist on Ballade pour Adeline, a song which was to bring him fame and fortune.
